Have you ever looked at what’s happening in the world and wondered: How do we keep showing up when everything feels so heavy?⁣ ⁣ As leaders, advocates, or simply human beings who care, we’ve all felt that urge to turn away. But whenever I feel that weight, I come back to a line from a woman who has spent her life on the frontlines:⁣ ⁣ “𝐈 𝐤𝐞𝐞𝐩 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐰𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐮𝐩 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐬𝐞 𝐰𝐡𝐨 𝐜𝐚𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐧 𝐚𝐰𝐚𝐲. 𝐈 𝐤𝐞𝐞𝐩 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐰𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐮𝐩 𝐛𝐞𝐜𝐚𝐮𝐬𝐞 𝐈 𝐜𝐚𝐧. She didn’t want to stand on the outside recording horrors—she needed to help change the very conditions that enabled them.⁣ ⁣ Her story is a reminder for anyone feeling exhausted right now: showing up isn’t just a duty—it is a daily, radical act of hope.⁣ ⁣ 👉 Swipe through the carousel above to read an exclusive snippet straight from her chapter in the book!⁣ ⁣ Deeply grateful to Anayansi for sharing her story, her strength, and her commitment to holding the line against despair. I hate that expression.⁣ ⁣ Why force them to adjust to our table when they are already building their own?⁣ ⁣ Young people already have the power, the vision, and the drive. They don’t need us to validate their future potential, they need us to recognize their present leadership.⁣ ⁣ Our job as established leaders isn’t to hoard the stage. It’s to:⁣ ⁣ 𝐇𝐨𝐥𝐝 𝐮𝐩 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐦𝐢𝐫𝐫𝐨𝐫: Show young activists the immense power and capability they already possess.⁣ ⁣ 𝐌𝐨𝐯𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞: Meet them where they are, on their terms, instead of expecting them to conform to broken systems.⁣ ⁣ 𝐏𝐚𝐬𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐦𝐢𝐜𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐡𝐨𝐧𝐞: Everyone has a voice, but not everyone gets access to the mic. 106 years ago today, the 19th Amendment was certified, barring any state from denying the vote on account of sex. But... not all women. Black, Native American, and Asian American women waited decades more. Women’s “Equality” Day is 53 years old. Where are we now? ▪️Pay: For every dollar paid to a white man: white women earn 77 cents. Black women 65. Latinas and Native women 58. Across a career, that gap costs women of color more than a million dollars each.
▪️Work: 845,000 women have left the US labor force since January. For men, 406,000.
▪️Power: Women hold 28% of Congress. 151 seats out of 535.
▪️Protection: In 1923, suffragist Alice Paul wrote the Equal Rights Amendment. 103 years later, it is still absent from the Constitution because we’re still “debating” equality.
Today, women’s rights sit in laws and federal policy. Whoever holds power can rewrite them, and is rewriting them right now. A constitutional amendment is harder to touch. That’s why ERA. We can take action: 1. Call politicians and say ERA!
 2. Check if your state is in or out (equalrightsamendment.org) - and push!
 3. Demand that November candidates support our basic rights!
This is the argument at the heart of my book Feminist Firestarter: Activism for an Unraveling World. Rights survive because ordinary people like you and I defend them. Otherwise we go on “commemorating” women’s INequality day and never actually arrive. Equality delayed is equality denied. Happy Women’s Equality Day... what are you doing today that counts?

For a few years my address was the dirt road behind Nirvana. Nirvana was a nightclub in Dakar. In Kabul, I lived on the main road just before Chicken Street. In Beirut, my address began with my neighborhood and a question — do you know where the church is? — and worked outward from whatever landmark we shared. In Port Moresby, my part of the city was called Town. Just… Town. None of these fit in the box on a form. It’s not #5 Main Street. A numbered grid makes a place legible to a stranger. Landmark directions make a place legible to a neighbor. To a community. And to its own history. People assume this means chaos. What happens when you need an ambulance?! The ambulance comes. The driver grew up three streets over and knows exactly which cinema you mean, including the one shelled decades ago and never rebuilt. Half of Beirut still navigates by buildings that are gone. The map lives in people. I see this in strangers desperate to bring their kind of order into things. They can’t. Yes, it’s charming. But also, for women, much of their lives live in landmarks — the unpaid work, the informal economy, the violence with no case number, the survivor who lives behind the old mosque. Systems count what they can locate and fund what they can count. Women keep living at the address you have to ask about to know about. The reverse holds too. The shelter with no sign. The clinic you find by asking the right woman, who tells you to ask another woman. The safe house stays safe because it cannot be written down. Illegibility keeps people alive. Both are true — it just depends on who is holding the map and what they intend to do with it. No crisis I have worked in came with street numbers. And in a crisis, many of those streets are destroyed. Legibility is the first thing to go. What remains is the woman who knows which road floods in March and which checkpoint is staffed by whom. Coordinates travel well — but tell you very little. Landmarks require you to have been somewhere and listened to someone. Someone who knows the community well enough to KNOW. [photo of the dirt road behind Nirvana on a particular wet day]

Yes, gender expectations affect men too. And those conversations matter. But bringing them up only when women are discussing inequality often shifts attention away from the issue at hand instead of adding to the conversation. Supporting women’s rights and addressing men’s challenges are not competing goals. We can care about both, without using one to silence the other. Every 10 minutes, somewhere in the world, a woman is killed by someone she knows. Someone in her own home. Someone who was supposed to love her. This is femicide—the intentional killing of women and girls because of their gender. But here is the problem: it’s rarely tracked accurately. When it’s lumped into general crime data, it becomes invisible. And if we don’t disaggregate the data, we can’t recognize it. If we don’t recognize it, we can’t respond to it. It’s time to change the narrative. We need to make it count so we can make it stop. Spread the word. Raise awareness. #Femicide #StopViolenceAgainstWomen #EndGenderBasedViolence #HumanRights #AwarenessMatters
